Question:
Any recommendations for upper (northern) Fla? or is it too cold this time of year?
I just went to Torreya State Park last week with a friend, and it was even a little too warm for my tastes (about 80-85F during day, maybe down to 60F at night). We were primarily backpacking – they have two primitive (has privy) camp areas (I think there are 3-4 individual "sites" at each of those), and I believe they have also have a developed camping area, although we did not go by there. It’s very small, and you probably wouldn’t spend a lot of time (2-3 days tops) there. The loop hike around the park is very interesting, especially for Florida (_very_ hilly, steep ascents and descents, some cliffs (100 foot) and large bluffs overlooking the Apalachicola River. May not be your thing if you are looking for "florida" camping (i.e. a beach, flat land, misc other boring stuff…). The park is located in the FL panhandle approx 1/3 of the way from Talahassee (sp?) to Pensacola near I-10. I would definately recommend it, esp. to you Floridians (like myself) who want to go up to the mountains, but don’t have the time to drive that far very often. Oz
Response:
i am from south ga, just across the fla border. it doesnt get cold anywhere in fla, anytime. there are some really great parks in northern fla, and a huge trans florida trail goes through the area. this trail is purported to be really cool and quite long, with widely varying terrain. an issue of backpacker has all of the info–i think it was early this year. hope this helps. — "logic is only the beginning of wisdom" Spock

Has anybody rented a boat and cruzed through the 10,000 islands? What about the Everglades National Park, can people set up on the beach? is it buggy in Jan? Any recommendations for upper (northern) Fla? or is it too cold this time of year? —
