Trips from the New York Area

Question:

Does anyone have any special trips from the NY area that you would like to share.  I need to build up my PIC and x-country time and would like to fly to some interesting places, I will fly a 172.

1) Head out to Reading PA and visit the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum, but make sure you go when someone’s home. Check their summer airshow schedule. 2) Speaking of airshows, the Sussex Air Show (Sussex NJ) and the Wings of Eagles Airshow (upstate NY used to be Geneseo but I think they’ve moved it) are two good weekend day trips. 3) If you want to try out your carrier landing skills check out Andover Aeroflex, NJ (12N). They’ve got 2000×25 feet with lakes at both ends. Good Luck! Mark

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a "must do".  Largest collection of flying WW-I era airplanes in the world, fun airshow, museum.  Open weekends May through October.  Landing a 172 there is no problem, just land to the north uphill and park on the east side near the hangar.  Yield to the Standard giving rides and any NORDO biplanes in the area, of course. New York state has many interesting sights.  Adirondacks near Lake Placid, Erie Canal locks and museums near Seneca Lake, Niagara Falls, Corning Glass Museum, Catskills.  Spend a weekend in Montreal; they have a world-class jazz festival in early July.   Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod are fun to explore. The Green and White Mountains of VT-NH have wonderful hiking, boating and camping all summer.  Maine is even better, from the lobster at Bar Harbor to the mountains.  And it’s not far to Ocean City (NJ or MD), the Cheaspeake Bay or even the Carolina shore.   Most of these are within a 3 hour radius of NYC in a 172.  Take a three- day weekend to explore the Maritimes: Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton and Nova Scotia especially.  Or a week, and fly into Oshkosh! – Rod Farlee
