Secluded camp sites in Wisconsin

Question:

I was interested to know if anyone knows of any good lakes or flowages in Wisconsin that have some secluded camping areas that are also good for kayaking.

Can’t get much better than the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Head for Bayfield, WI. Sea caves, primitive camp sites, bears maybe. Lynn

That’s a big lake.  You may also want to check out the Turtle-Flambeau flowage for camping.  It looks to me like most of the Up North kinda lakes would be good… you should also check out the Sylvania wilderness on the UP wisconsin border. – Dirk

Another suggestion would be The Boundary Waters. Never been there but heard it’s great. There will be portaging which works best with a canoe, so I’m told. I talked to a kayaker that had a lot of fun there and didn’t have a problem with the portages. Saw Moose and all kinds of neat things. Lynn

The entire St.Croix riverway in western Wi. is a very user friendly place to go.  Camp sites along the rivers, with no-flush poopers, and child friendly as well….from there the sky’s the limit.   Check out a book called "Paddling Northern Wiscnsin" by Mike Svob.   Craig http://community.webtv.net/juskanuit/juskanuit "just canoe it"

Response:

You could try the St. Croix river on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin and it’s tributaries in Wisconsin, the Nammakagin is one from Hayward on down. There are primative campsites all along this route. It is a US senic waterway that protects it from development. I have paddled a solo canoe and camped over 100 miles of it!!
