Uwharrie NF (NC): Good for backpacking?

Question:

The Birkhead Wilderness is really great for backpacking and primitive camping.  It has a large loop good for 1-2 nghts.  Birkhead is only for foot travel; no mtn. bikes, horses, etc. allowed.

My only criticism of Birkhead WIlderness is that the Boy Scouts have interpreted "wilderness" to include the construction of concrete barbeque pits.

Response:

not to be negative but I didn’t like the area.  Tried it about 3 times. Couldn’t find good water..it’s too hot and un spectacular.  Hunter types arrive with tons of gear in a wheelbarrow… drink all nite…walk out and get pizzas and more beer… and go bow hunting in the area. my wife and I gave up and returned to the Smokey’s near Bryson City.  MUuuuuuch better. Hi, folks, Anyone here done a 2-3 day trip here? Are there good loop options? Thanks! A good guide book for the Uwharries is the Sportsman’s Guide to the

Uwharrie Trial and the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness by Bob Finley. I do not see a publisher noted in the book, but Bob Finley gives his address as: P.O. Box 5095, Burlington, NC  27215.  He may sell the pocket sized books himself?  A nice loop hike starts at the parking area off highway 24/27, 2.2 miles on the left past the bridge over Lake Tillery going west out of Albemarle.  The hike is a 23.5 mile figure eight loop using 12.11 miles of the Uwharrie Trail and 11.39 miles of the Dutchman’s Creek Trail.  You can get trail maps at local gas stations.  The trails are well marked with blazes.  I prefer the winter and early spring and fall for hiking the Uwharries.  A little hot and buggy in the summer.  The Western NC Mountains call in the summer. Hi Pete, The Birkhead Wilderness is really great for backpacking and primitive camping.  It has a large loop good for 1-2 nghts.  Birkhead is only for foot travel; no mtn. bikes, horses, etc. allowed.  The Uwharrie Forest itself also has many loops available, and is south of Birkhead.  Much of the southern portion has horse trails, camping and hook-up facilities, and primitive camp sites.  Neither are what I’d call ’strenuous’ hikes, but they’re good for a fun weekend.  I’ve been able to get topo maps at REI, here in Raleigh, NC.  Shouldn’t be too hard to find… deHart has a section in his book, "North Carolina Hiking Trails" by Allen de Hart, devoted to Uwharrie.  Be sure to check it out, it’s a MUST have for hiking in NC! — Best Regards,   ^ Dave           /- ‘98                 |
