Day 11 of 100 Days to Thanksgiving 253/244/195 Got on the scales just now and saw that I’ve lost 9 pounds in the last 11 days. Of course a lot of this has been water, I’m sure, but it is fun to see the pounds go off, feel my belt looser, and also to know that this has a beneficial impact on blood pressure, etc. Last evening made it up my little hill with a 25 pound pack on just before sunset, at about 7:55. In driving down the hill, we stopped to see the last edge of the sun fall behind the hills to the west at 7:28:30. (I think a newspaper weather report two days ago said that the sun will now set before 8 p.m. and soon the nights will be longer than the days.) I had about 800 calories yesterday, all at dinner – mostly rice and some curry with chicken. Tasted fine. I drank a lot of water and feel full. The summit of Middle Sisters in Central Oregon beckons and I’m practicing to go up it in several weeks. It has a 10,000 foot summit. Last summer I went up South Sisters. Weighed considerably less than I do now. But slowly I plodded my way to the top of that summit, also about 10,000 feet. Great, great outing – quite arduous for me. Very, very nice people there: "You can’t turn back! You’re almost there!" and they were right. Although I sure slowed down from time to time. We all go at our own pace and it sure doesn’t pay to burn out at the pace set by someone else. Encouragement sure helps people accomplish difficult things. I’ve also lately taken to hiking with a radio and/or cassette tapes to distract myself from the plodding. When I used to run, I used to use the same approach. I hope everyone has a great day and huge success in the future! Yours, Caleb

The climb of Middle Sister sounds like great fun. Do you do these as backpacking trips or as dayhikes? Enjoy the butterflies! Matthew

Response:

My wife and I have hiked every year for the past 4 years to a lake in central Oregon with friends. Part of a yearly ritual and it was great this year too, along with our daughter and her boyfriend. 6 years ago I would have been totally unable to have done that. (I think that more of my weight now is strength derived from regular walks, etc.) By the way, as you know "Matthew" means "gift of Yahweh" and "Caleb" means "dog" (as I tell clients). [Also it means "courageous" but that's not as ice-breaking to stressed out clients.] Well, I’m out the door with my son now at 10:50 pm on Friday and he will volunteer at the Mt. Hood to Coast relay (in which our daughter and thousands of others are running) until about 4 in the morning. (I’ll be sleeping in the car for a while but I’ll be driving too and from.) Yours, Caleb

Response:

Matthew — Thanks for your inquiry — These are backpacking trips. We are going to backpack in the Friday following Labor Day (three weeks from today) and it will be about 5 miles with a fairly steep uphill grade. We’ll camp close to a place called Sunshine — really an idyllic place with a terrific stream, wild-flowers, etc. But we don’t have a permit to camp at Sunshine itself, and we’ll probably have to set up tent further up the rocky mountain. Then early on Saturday, after coffee, we’ll start up Middle Sisters with a lighter pack and with crampons and ice axes in our packs. This guy I sometimes work with is an avid hiker and the experiences he plans are always interesting, even if they are always fairly arduous. We will have our usual hiking stuff — two way radios, GPS devices, water purifiers, etc. Do you go hiking? Gee — the world can sure look wonderful from a campsite looking out (especially if I have my contact lenses in). Makes one appreciate nature a heck of a lot more, I think. Yours, Caleb

   Do you go hiking?

I hike often in the fall and winter and early spring, much less in the summer. Gee — the world can sure look wonderful from a campsite looking out (especially if I have my contact lenses in). Makes one appreciate nature a heck of a lot more, I think.

Agreed. And it’s not just the scenery, I love the smells and the sounds. My GF says food tastes even better outdoors. — Matthew Slow and steady wins the race.

Q: Do you know why the blonde got fired from the M&M factory? A: For throwing out the W’s.

Response:

Hi. I can’t acess my account because the flood of my portugese and Russian spams has prevented it. I can take a handful…say matbe two hundred and delete the spams. But then when I try to get more I just reload the same spams from my account. There are hundreds of spams to each personal message and I can’t recover the messages past……maybe four days ago so I give up. The bad news is thast I am also unable to get to my address book. So……. If you have been one of those lucky individuals to have received any of my group mailings in the past please forward it to me at this address. That way I can contact some of you. Also….. I would particularly want Judy’s e-mail if someone has it. Yeah I’m deep in the woods up along the Hudson River typing this from a small shack/bungalo. Its a real thrill. So I hope no one went too crazy nuts during my absence. Its likely I won’t be posting here much as I have time constraints. Its volunteer work at something like an adult summer camp. Very new agey. One of the courses people are taking is "Advanced Shape Shifting". YUoga classes, drum circles, saunas, kinda neat. The work is very hard. All I get is free place to sleep and free meals. Plus free acess to many classes. So write me if you like. I’ll try to respond but may not be able. I already have a few correspondents whooze address I was able to retrieve. Hay Yo Hi Spheric! Sorry but I am unable to read posts today because of time constraints. We get free web acess too. yeah I lost most all my addresses thanks to the hundreds of spanish and russian e-mails in my webtv account. When I get home I’ll be able to sort it out. See I was off line for maybe four days and my spam volume, hundreds by that time have made acess impossible. So bye bye Hope all is well with all. Yeah see if you can send me a group mailing I sent you I can have addresses I might care and have time, to write to. Making friends with a nightly skunk visitor at my campsite. Very sensitive and compassionate creature. Roadster

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My dad is a farmer. He is also a cat lover and all his barn cats are vaccinated and sleek and tame and well cared for. When his cows are calving, he gets up every other hour all night to check on them and make sure they are not in trouble. So late one night, he was out checking the cows and on his way out of the barn he saw a cat sitting by the step. He went over to give the cat a pet on the head. He was just bending over when he froze because… …because kitty ain’t no kitty…. …because kitty was a black beastie with a long white stripe down his nose to the bottom of his very fluffy tail… Dad froze. And then very slowly started to stand up and back away. I was worried about window leaks from the strong slashing rain. Then the power went off. I had some difficulties finding my candle and matches. It is stifling hot with no fan or AC. The humidex is 33C. A look out the windows told me not the whole city is in the dark. So no repeat of the Big Blackout in Aug.2 years ago. Finally the power is back on but the thunder continues. Rusty moved to hide behind the washer. Just wish it will blow over soon. — Winnie

Winnie! Please get a battery powered flashlight for such occassions! I don’t want to hear of an accident. I hope the storm is over soon.

I bought a powerful flashlight after the big blackout in Aug 2003. But I had trouble fitting the batteries in for some reason. The outside hallway’s light has emergency backup power so I just opened the door to get some light. I just put all the emergency supplies I bought in a handy place. Candle, matches, walkman etc. Put Rusty in his carrier and sat with him in the hallway for a bit. That seems to calm him down. The thunder didn’t sound as loud in the hallway. It was cooler there too. I really don’t like thunderstorm. Now I am too unnerved to sleep even though it is over for now. The forecast said about 30% chance of thunder showers overnight. Winnie

Another suggestion would be wome of those nightlights with a battery backup. They don’t offer much light, but enough so that you aren’t stumbling around in complete darkness when the power goes out. I also have an electric Coleman camping lantern which I keep plugged in under the desk which comes on when the power cuts out. Now that does offer enough light to see by – though like you said in a followup message the batteries seem hard to find for some reason, and last time when the batteries died I ended up replacing the whole thing. Maybe you can tell, but power outages are not unusual for us here in SW Oklahoma, what with our spring and fall (and occasional summer) thunderstorms. A couple years ago we lost power for a couple or three days. Local motels with power were full, our apartment complex was empty except for me and one other tenant. I had my full camping kitchen setup on the patio, and except for the heat didn’t miss much not having the electric. — Steve Touchstone, faithful servant of Sammy, Little Bit and Spot with loving memories of Rocky (RB) Home Page: http://www.sirinet.net/~stouchst/index.html Cat Pix: http://www.sirinet.net/~stouchst/animals.html

I will look into getting these. I got the batteries for my flashlight, except I couldn’t get them in. Maybe you can tell, but power outages are not unusual for us here in SW Oklahoma, what with our spring and fall (and occasional summer) thunderstorms.
Power outages are getting far too frequent. With the severe heat, power consumption is at a max. We were warned to conserve power or face brown outs or rotating blackouts. Since the Big Black Out in Aug. 2003 which affected both U.S. and Canada, I am more prepared. I live in a highrise, and the water pumps won’t work without power meaning no water also. But I think they put the water pumps on emergency power now, along with the elevators. Since I live across the river from Quebec, I can always go there. Quebec has done something after the Big Freezing Rain of 1998 to make sure their power supply won’t be compromised. I always saw lights on the Quebec side, even when it was pitched black here. I don’t know which is worse: power outage in the dead of winter or in the summer. To freeze or to roast. Probably the former as I can always bundled. up. Of course Rusty is not fazed by any power outage, just scared of the roar of the thunder monster.
LOL! Persia has gotten over her fear of suitcases (as long as I don’t fuss about putting stuff IN it). The other night the temps were nice and cool. I woke up early in the morning to hear Persia parting the vertical blinds on the patio door. I sat up in bed and she was perched on top of my horizontal suitcase, sticking her head through the slatted blinds to catch a glimpse of the early birds on the patio. I just smiled and went back to sleep.
Your opinion is worth a lot to me! I thought I was the only person here who liked Zydeco music? We were only about 20 feet from the stage. Buckwheat is great, but I must admit that I haven’t heard many others.
Actually there are two kinds of music down in Louisiana which sort of developed over the decades and are very much alike: Zydeco (the black version) and Cajun (the white version). The lyrics are invariably in the peculiar kind of French they speak there. In more contemporary efforts there is a leaning towards fusion with rock music and writing in English but those recordings are also quite interesting. I’m not an expert but here are some names. I don’t know if a concert counts, but about 3 months ago I saw "Buckwheat Zydeco" perform at a small old theater. Tono Niiiiice! One of the best. IMO. FWIW.

I thought I’d reply twice since my two posts are so drastically different. The concert was really a bummer for me. I left and felt like crying. I would have if I was alone. Zydeco music seems like it’s the easiest thing to dance to, and I have never fast danced except a few be able to just get out there and do it, but even with the years of seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist, and getting my meds to what may be the best they will ever help, still I’m deathly afraid of getting up and dancing. Many times I’ve been literally dragged out to a dance floor only to stand there frozen. Then they finally let go and I go back to my seat feeling like the worlds biggest fool. I know it’s not true that every person in the building has their eyes focused on me, but it always feels that way. Seriously, seeing other people so care free and not being able to do the same has been a life long curse I have lived with. It’s one of my worst emotional pains due to anxiety/panic/paranoia. Why can’t I have fun also? Tono — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Thanks for telling us a bit about yourself, Matt. I wish I had some talent, any talent, especially in music, like the piano. My brother, Paul, has all the talent in our family. :-) He started out by painting regular size paintings, but then found the money was better painting miniatures, like for doll houses or mantels. He was also in a band and knows how to play lead and bass guitar. LOL Here I am telling you about him instead of about me. There’s really nothing to tell. :-) I’ve been a secretary for most of my life, but when the ag hit me in 1984 I had to quit my job. I haven’t worked since March 2000, been living in Canada since Nov. 2000 and love it here. My husband, Don and I met right here on this newsgroup. We’ll be married 4 years this Nov. That’s all I can think of. I usually only have disorder things to talk about. :-) Just kidding. I love camping … it’s what my family and I do the most of it seems, we try for 30 nights a year … we did the tent thing a couple times but quickly migrated to a popup and never regreted it one bit … I also do a lot of photography and astronomy stuff so that seems to keep my interests up, although weather in Michigan doesn’t permit well to astronomy!
Aha! OK, I didn’t think that’s still part of the Channel (and I haven’t been that far West myself–only as far as Teignmouth, when I was seven). > and the big bit of land on the right is Brittany, France: > http://tinyurl.com/9zy4x

*ahem* Same URL…. But point taken. > Somewhere on that spikey looking double bay is a tiny campsite we stayed > at in 1990. The car battery went flat & the litle old camsite lady let > us recharge it from the mains for free. It was the night England went > out of the World Cup on penalties:-( but we were able to listen to it > all on the car radio as the battery recharged. The campsite (and the > lady!) were there when we went back in 2002. > (Oh and the local garage towed us back to the campsite for free on the > grounds we weren’t German tourists wantingto get back to hear the > match:-)

Heheheh > >> ooh no sorry, they listen to us with these beautiful creatures: > >> http://www.veggies.org.uk/calendar/menwith.gif > >Heh…. Those are just the covers. > Wass underneath then? little men with ear trumpets?

No, no, *B*I*G* men with ear trumpets! ________________________________________________________________________ Louise Bremner (log at gol dot com) If you want a reply by e-mail, don’t write to my Yahoo address!

Google maps is a very well integrated tool with good pan and zoom, but you’ll end up getting better maps, and in some cases aerial photographs too, by using the traditional UK mapping utilities you can find on my web page under "maps and addresses". http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/ The university web site has lots of specific campus maps. http://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/ Because it’s an old university (400 years old), it has buildings and campuses spread throughout the city. You can’t actually take a visitor anyhere, and point, and say, "THAT is Edinburgh University". Just as, as Gilbert Ryle pointed out, you can’t take someone to a dissected human body and point, and say "THAT is the human mind." — Chris Malcolm c…@infirmatics.ed.ac.uk +44 (0)131 651 3445 DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King’s Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/]

Being the Seinfeld fan that I am, I came across a seller that is offering every episode on DVD. In fact, I am finding quite a few DVD’s of TV shows on ebay that I cannot find through Amazon or anywhere else. Is there some underground network out there making home cooked DVD’s? OK, I am not that naive to assume that there isn’t but that is a lot of work to transfer every episode to DVD. here’s the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5574874673 Any thoughts on this? Ken

According to www.imdb.com they have seasons 1-3 on DVD [R1] And the Sony website (below) has seasons 1-4 listed http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-a=sp1001eac9&sp-k=Home+Entertainme… Like you, I can see no sign of Seinfeld DVD’s on the sites that sell DVD’s … so an assumption that they are copied. Why not ask the guy? As for quality … well, that it going to depend on how he’s ripped them, what he ripped them to and how he’s created the DVD’s. There’s a lot of questions to be asked if you’re expecting top notch quality. Suggest that you be quick … if they are pirates, then eBay will pull them off, if they see them.

To be honest, I was an eager noob wanting to get all the new theatrical release movie bootlegs I could when I first got a DVD player. But after a while the novelty wore off when I realized for the price I was paying the picture & sound quality was terrible and that I looked forward to the extras on the legitimately manufactured & released movie DVDs. I still have one for a keepsake, a grainy copy where you can see the heads of the people sitting a couple of rows ahead of the cameraperson, smoking and talking (an Asian language I imagine) during the movie… Good for a few laughs… Matty

I go to about three different flea markets, several times a year for each. Don’t buy much, but like to browse. I recall in the late 1990’s a ton of poorly packaged bootleg VHS and cassettes. I can remember 2000-2001 a ton of bootleg CD-Rs, with magic marker hand written "labels". In 2002 it completely vanished. I’m not sure what happened. Obviously people still bootleg. To this day, at these flea markets have no bootleg media. Garmets and accessories, probably, but I’m not sure. There was a time I bought a leather Buxton wallet for $10 that was the exact same thing I saw in outlet stores for $25… Two years later the wallet is shot. I didn’t expect that. Perhaps it is bogus.

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – There is also the underground network scenario… where a bunch of people get together and divide-up the work… so each one just has to make one DVD master… then they all pool together to dupe them so they all have a full set. Doing it that way, if you had enough people it might not take that long… but the quality isn’t going to be that good. Why wouldn’t the quality be that good? If they are DVR recordings to DIVX rips…. You’d have to assume that the person doing the rips knows what he/she is doing… and takes time to properly edit out the commercials without cutting into the show. Also consider that most shows in syndication are edited from their original network airing, so stuff is probably missing unless these were recorded from the original airing years ago. Then you have to figure they know how to use their software to transfer from the DVR to the computer and not screw it up with overcompression to fit on the DVD… and probably the menus they put on the DVD will not look professional unless they are just really bored, and good of course at it. And certainly, no "extras" will be there… like deleted scenes or interviews or commentary, that sort of thing usually on a real release… The label on the DVD (if there even is one) is probably not going to look that good, given limitations of most home-user label-creation software & hardware. Not advocating bootlegs at all here… BUT, if they were bootleg copies of released DVD sets from the studios they stand a lot better chance of being of decent quality than if they are complete home-brew DVDs, and we know that must be the case because only the first 3 seasons have been officially released so far, though season 4 is due in a few weeks so early leaks of copies are possible at this point. Bootleg quality is notoriously low… not necessarily because it has to be… but because most folks into the bootlegging simply don’t care and it isn’t worth the time to make it quality anyway. -Stewart http://www.indenter.com/comics

That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry was forced to bootleg the movie, ‘Death Blow’… He mentioned to someone all the comments he overheard kids giving a street seller, asking if there were any other movies with the same quality as the ‘Death Blow’ bootleg….
I believe it is a scam. There is no picture, the high bidders IDs are private, and the price is ridiculously cheap compared to the true retail for the separate seasons. These bootleggers are all over e-Bay, but usually, they are registered in Hong Kong… mjoann

Great pic! When we still lived in Vancouver, I’d see bald eagles all the time. There is a road through farmland on the way to the ferry where you could see their nests on the trees in the winter when there were no leaves on the trees. On one drive I counted over 20 eagles one time. Wish I’d had a good camera then! I enjoyed reading about your canoe trip too. Reminded me of one summer when Dennis and I had my parents’ small 15 foot boat. On Canada Day (July 1) we took it to Pitt Lake, this really long 30 km lake near Vancouver. We had some beers and stopped the boat in the middle of the lake to suntan in our birthday suits. Suddenly we heard the sound of an aproaching engine. Looked up and saw a police boat coming up to us. They had a tall tower on the boat. We scrambled to get dressed and hide our beers. There were a few young policemen on the boat and they were smirking down at us from their tower. Asked if we had any beer. Of course we denied it and they went on their way. We decided to keep our clothes on for the rest of the day! — Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." — Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

We launched at sometime between 11:00 am and 11:30am.

I really enjoyed your trip, the photo of the eagle is just great, not only the setting but his pose! David (DH) and I often ventured out in canoes or inflatables then a boat we bought (and sold). We live in Central Florida and love the natural settings and wildlife. We also photograph a lot. Well I should say we used to. David now has a job where he is gone for long periods of time. He is a long haul over the road (OTR) 48 state truck driver. He also goes into Canada and takes loads to Lorado, Texas that get put into other trailers to go into Mexico. He has been gone three weeks now and is not expected home for another three weeks. So we don’t go camping, hiking, boating or photographing any more. We both miss it, that is why I was so happy reading about your trip (I swear I could feel each bite and the sunburn!) Charleen

Actually, the bus weren’t biting quite that bad at all – only had a few spiders drop on me from low hanging branches. Just brushed them off and kept on paddling. I did get scratched up a bit when I had to climb up on the bank and work my way through a maze of brush to find a tree to go potty behind – saw tons of deer prints on the way there too! We did get startled by a rather large turtle of some sort, it must have been resting on one of the submerged trunks and when we came by it popped way up and then splash – it was gone. I thought it was a gator coming towards us, but then I remembered we don’t have wild gators here in Indiana. Guess I just watch too much Animal Planet — The ONE and ONLY lefthanded-pathetic-paranoid-psychotic-sarcastic-wiseass-ditzy former-blonde in Bloomington! (And proud of it, too)
